Colleen Meade - Interesting Links
In my travels around the web, I have found a number of
interesting sites.
I have grouped them into the following categories:
Astronomy and/or the Space Program
Artists/Photographers/Photography
Animals (Horses, Cats, etc.)

Astronomy and/or Space Program Links
And I quote: 'Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or
photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a
brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.'
Highly Recommended!!
You might also want to link directly to one of these three
related sites:
* Any given 'Picture of the Day'
by date
For example March 23, 1999 (990323)
* A
Chronlological Index
of all the 'Pictures of the Day'
* An
Index by Subject
for example, 'Galaxies', 'Saturn', etc.
A list of all the NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) Images,
starting with the latest one(s). The NEAR satellite 'rendezvoused'
with the Eros asteroid on February 14th, 2000, and went into orbit
around it. The images it is returning are incredible - have a look!
Hubble - HST Images by Subject
This is the motherlode! It leads to all the photographs
from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) that are now in the
public domain, as well as plenty of text information.
Be warned, however, downloading some of the sections
may take some time...
Highly Recommended!!
Astrocruise: Cruising the Heavens
Images - Within the Milky Way
There are some really beautiful astronomical phenomena whose pictures
aren't available in the Hubble files, such as the Trifid Nebula, and
this is one of the best sites I've found for these. The thumbnail
image above is © 1998 by Philip Perkins and is used with his
permission.
Recommended!!
You might also want to link directly to one of the other
two 'Astrocruise' pages:
* Images -
Beyond the Milky Way
* Images -
Within the Solar System
The home page also has some interesting links to articles
on astrophotography and other associated topics.
This site will give you information about past, present and future shuttle missions, as well as lead you to anything and everything you ever wanted to know about the U.S. Space Program.
This is not an official site. It was just created by a fan,
but it does contain a number of interesting links. Be warned
that a few of them are no longer active.
You might also want to link directly to one of these three
related sites:
* 'Sky and Telescope' magazine's
Mir page
* This NASA site (also linked to from the 'Sky and
Telescope' page) gives (and shows on a globe)
the exact location of Mir,
updated once per minute!
* This German Space Operations Center (GSOC) site will tell you
when and where Mir will pass over your location
as well as the same information for other satellites
(like the International Space Station or Iridium flares).
The Galileo Mission to Jupiter
This site will give you information about the Galileo
Mission to Jupiter, as well as links to all sorts of
other information about Jupiter, like the collision
with Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9.
You might also want to link directly to one of these
related sites:
* Go straight to the
images
from the mission
* Go straight to the
Shoemaker-Levy 9

Artists, Photographers and/or Photography Links
Dale Chihuly is a Seattle glassblower, probably best known
for his 'Chihuly Over Venice' project. His website is very
well designed, both aesthetically and technically. It
showcases his work beautifully and efficiently.
Highly Recommended!!
Freeman Patterson is a Canadian with an international
reputation as a nature photographer. He has authored
numerous books, both of photographs and on photography.
He also conducts workshops from his home base in New Brunswick.
His website presents information on all these areas.
Two other photographers who assist Freeman at his workshops also
have websites:
*
André Gallant and
*
Don Martel
In addition, I have put on-line some photographs that I took when
I attended one of his workshops. They can be viewed singly or as
a slide show, complete with your choice of musical background:

David Mendelsohn is a photographer working out of New Hampshire.
His portfolio is divided into commercial and personal sections,
both of which contain many interesting images. The photograph
above is used with his permission (Copyright © 1999 - All

I found this site through the page of another website designer,
Linda VanderZande
whose page was the top prize winner in the recent Sympatico contest.
It is also an interesting and artistic site.
This site is maintained privately (by J.Smith) as a place to find a list of many of the photographers who have sites on the Internet (I'll register there myself once I get my 'Photography' page done). It's a great starting place to do some browsing...

Animal Links - Horses, Cats, etc.
The 'Spruce Meadows' facility in Calgary, Alberta is THE premier venue in Canada for equestrian events. Their website is well-designed and informative, but it CAN take quite a bit of time to download.
This part of the 'Pet Planet' website will give you information about cats in general as well as about different breeds in particular.

NEIC: Near Real-Time Earthquake List
This page of the National Earthquake Information Center website
has a list (and a map!)
of all the earthquakes that have
happened all over the planet in the last few days.
You'll
be amazed how many there, even up to the 4.0 and 5.0 levels
of magnitude
(on the Richter scale). If you click on an
earthquake (from the list or the map), a really
detailed
page of information will be presented. Absolutely fascinating !!
This page is a simple .gif file of the image from the US
Weather
Satellite. Nothing fancy, no animations, Flash or
Shockwave - just
a quick, plain 'snapshot' of the weather over
the United States and southern
Canada. Updated quite frequently
(several times/day, sometimes more).
NOTE: There used to be a better one (covering a larger area),
but, as of
August 3rd, it doesn't seem to be getting updated any more.
My daughter has recently started collecting 'Beanie Babies', so I
am learning more than I ever wanted to know about them.
This link takes you to the main 'Ty' home page. From there
you can branch to the page on 'Beanie Babies'. Their website
has recently been reorganized, so there are no longer pages
for 'current' and 'retired' beanies.
You might also want to link directly to this site (Ebay) to see some
beanie babies for sale
(just enter 'beanie babies' as your search keywords).
